Can the Red Wings win a championship this year? And if so, what do they have to do? |
Joe Russo May 16, 09 | To repeat this year the Wings have to do a few things right, a few they are already doing and need to step up in two key areas. First they must continue to roll those four lines, and every so often double shift Pav or Z with some of those kids, Helm and Abby, and try and create some quick chances, use their speed. They must be able to score on Chicagos 3rd and 4th lines, something they didnt do as well against the Ducks. Another issue that needs resolving is why the H E double hockey sticks is Datsyuk NOT scoring. I've watched every game and it seems like he may be playing injured. At times he's a beast, and then you don't see much from him for a while. NOT something Detroiters are used to seeing from him. Just saying. Checking is a major key. But just as they didn'w want to get into an all out war with Anaheim, Chicago is not someone you need to goon up to win. Keep playing that puck possession and make sure the forwards are forechecking hard. Get a few big hits on Kane and Teows, don't head-hunt though. Detroit MUST rattle the Hawks young guns if they dont wanna see another Anaheim scenerio unfold. If I were Babcock(obviously not) I would seriously think about my pairings on the blueline. Somethings wrong there. Too many pucks sliding through the slot and crease in critical times and on special teams. I'm flashing back to the regular season where a team that could have won 70+ games coasted through a forgettable season that got them the 2ndseed in the West. It's the same thing. No effort, little passion, and untimely lapses have madethem vulnerable. The power play is statistically ok, but how many of you looked at what was going on with a man advantage and yelled at the TV, "Get Your @$$*& Moving!". At least 8 times. Personally. Just saying. Bottom line is if they get the same solid and reliable play from Osgood that they have been getting, and shore up the "Turnover Problem", all should end well in about 5 games. Oh, and Pav gets 8 points this series. Period. |
