Pierce Wilkinson's Detroit Red Wings Fan Profile

Who am I?

I'm a longtime sports fan and longtime writer, and in turn I enjoy writing about sports. I live in Seattle, but I'm from Detroit, and I'll always value my hometown Detroit teams over my Seattle teams. I'm primarily a football fan, an amateur analyst when I'm feeling a little cocky, but I dabble in baseball and hockey, primarily for my hometown teams.

That Drama in Oakland posted on 09/30/2008
Well, there was little secret it was coming. No one is surprised today that the Oakland Raiders fired their head coach, Lane Kiffin. And all things considered, it's too bad, and it proves to me that the Raiders are now the most mismanaged team in all of football. With Matt Millen gone from Detroit, it seems that even before this boneheaded move by Al Davis, the Raiders had gained significant ground. But this makes it certain.

Now, I understand that Davis is old and wants to win again before he dies. That's fine. But if that's the case, he needs to allow someone with a cooler head to run his team for him, because his erratic, impatient decisions are systematically destroying this franchise from the inside out. Lane Kiffin may not have been a great choice for head coach after the 2006 season. Many said he was too young and wouldn't be ready to lead an NFL team. He was only an assistant coach at USC. And yet, Kiffin had started to turn the Raiders around. He coached them in 20 games - 16 of 16 in 2007 and the first 4 games of 2008. Hardly enough time to expect a full turnaround of a franchise. But he had the players playing well and playing hungry. This was a team that was learning and a team that was developing. He was bringing out the best in what he had and they were staying in games against teams that, in my opinion, are frankly better than the Raiders. They almost beat the 4-0 Bills, after all, and they had San Diego on the ropes at halftime this past weekend. Those are signs of progress for a young team and they make me think this is a guy you keep around.

Brett, noooo! posted on 07/12/2008
As per this article that I saw today upon my arrival home, I felt the urge to spill my thoughts on this virtual paper, since I've been forcing them upon coworkers. To summarize the article quickly though, for those too lazy to visit the link, the jist of it is that Brett Favre wants back and he wants the Green Bay Packers to release him.

First of all, I must point out to you, reader, that I disdain any form of indecisiveness in people. I respect the kind of person who can make an educated decision and then stick to it. Flip-floppers get no respect in my book, or at least very little. Secondly, I have to also inform you of the great respect I have for Brett Favre - even as a hometown fan of a division rival (my hapless Detroit Lions), I had a hearty amount of respect for him as a player and a person - he is an NFL legend beyond a doubt. But I think once the decision is made to retire, tearful press conference and all, you have to stick to that. Choosing to retire from a good team that had a good run and could make a better run next year... you don't come back from that with "hey, release me won't ya?" five months later.

They're not Tigers at the end of May... they're kittens. posted on 05/30/2008

I was really excited coming into this baseball season - the Detroit Tigers were perhaps one of the most hyped teams entering the season.  The trade for Miguel Cabrera was supposed to be huge and the Tigers had made several other offseason acquisitions geared towards giving the team the offensive push to be a real contender.  Then the season opened... opened to a sweep by the Kansas City Royals.

Two months later, it's the end of May and I think that makes it a good time for an early overall analysis of a team and where it's going.  The true benchmark of the season is, as always, the All-Star Break, but this is a nice mid-point between the start of the season and the break.  Sure, the Tigers had some injury issues already - Granderson missing the first 15 games hurt, as did Sheffield's lingering finger injury.  But those things aren't really parts of the real problem they face, the problems that I believe will keep them out of the playoffs this season, no matter how well they're hitting.
