The NHL has constantly been trying to show that their league is the best to the public all over the world. For the past few seasons, the league has sent four of their teams overseas to play in places such as Germany, Sweden and England. The teams usually open the NHL regular season a week early, playing two games in the country that they were designated. This season the league has decided to send the St. Louis Blues and Detroit Red Wings to Sweden, and the Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers to Finland. Not only are these teams playing each other, but they will see time against some of the best teams of the chosen nation in pre-season play.

The Red Wings are still considered by many to be the top team in the Central Division in 2009-10. With Pavel Datsyuk playing some of the smartest hockey in the league, Henrik Zetterberg putting pucks in the net more often than not and Nicklas Lidstrom stonewalling forwards more than his goaltender, the Red Wings will put yet another powerful product on the ice. But in order to retain these all-stars, the Red Wings have had to see their depth take a nosedive.

The Chicago Blackhawks were probably the busiest team when NHL free agency opened and made the biggest splash when they signed Marian Hossa to an incredible 12-year $62.8m deal.
Hossa will be on his third team in three seasons and the Blackhawks have to hope he brings the best of his game from Detroit to the table this coming season or they could have just paid a lot of money for not a lot of product.

The Blues got a fantastic run out of starter Chris Mason last season, as he was the driving force for the Blues' run to the playoffs. The Blues sent former starter Manny Legace to Peoria of the AHL in February, which left the back-up role a question mark. Until now.

The Detroit Red Wings announced that they would not be offering 47 year old D-Man Chris Chelios a new contract, ending his run with that team.
Watching Chelios in the last couple of years was amazing, here is a guy, virtually my age, banging away with the best and the youngest of them in the NHL. I am sure that, if he wanted to, he could find a slot on another team, but should he? I think no.

The NHL season hasn’t even been over for a week and I already miss it. I have a fever and the only cure is more blaring goal horns. This season left a much better taste in my mouth than the previous one because not only did the Blues make it back to the postseason, their biggest rival didn’t win the postseason. The Red Wings had everything going their way. There hadn’t been a home team that had lost a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in 38 years. The road team hasn’t won a championship in a Game 7 in any professional sport since the Pirates did it back in 1979. So Detroit took that fact and dominated the first period. Pittsburgh outshot the Wings 10-6 in the first, but it didn’t feel that way watching it. But then Detroit let them off the hook.

The agony of defeat!
After a serious battle in which the home team dominated play in every game but the last in the series, the Detroit Red Wings fell to the Pittsburg Penguins 2-1 in the final NHL game of the year. Pittsburgh was obviously hungry for the Cup, and they played a great game and a great series to win it!

The Pittsburgh Penguins squeaked by the Detroit Red Wings by a single goal to take Game 6 by a score of 2-1 on their home ice. As has been the precedent, the team having home ice advantage has taken every game so far in this too-close-to-call series. The Red Wings will be glad to come back to play Game 7 at Joe Louis arena where they rarely lose. They have an 11-1 record so far this year on home ice in the playoffs - and have outscored Pittsburgh 11-2 so far at home in this series.

All eyes will be on the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday as they seek to keep the Cup in Hockeytown for yet another year. Although the Penguins have played well on their home ice in this series, it is clear that the Red Wings are on a mission after last week's 5-0 blowout in Game 5. The Penguins were clearly frustrated and showed a lack of class in Game 5, taking several unnecessary penalties and game misconducts.

I went over to Patti and Jeff's last night to watch Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals, with the Detroit Red Wings up 2 games to 1 in the series. We all know that when a home team is down 2-1, Game 4 is a must-win. This was no exception. Detroit came out strong in the first period, dominating play for nearly the entire 20 minutes. The lone Penguins goal came on a power play, but early on it seemed like the Wings were going to do what they always do, which is control the puck, maintain the offensive zone, send forwards down low, take big shots from the point, and pounce on rebounds for goals. The first two games were clinical in their approach. Once the Wings get a lead, it's all about clogging the neutral zone and slowing down the opposing team's forwards. This is nothing new. It's not exciting, but it works.

Last night Pittsburgh authorities put out an APB for Sidney Crosby who has been missing since the series verses the Hurricanes.
Hey Sid the Kid is a great player and he has a great team around him. But they are not the Detroit Red Wings. But the Penguins made the most of their 20 shots on Chris Osgood netting 3 of them. They added an empty net goal to close the deal 4 - 2 over the powerful Red Wings.

The recent version of the Detroit dynasty has proven to be an offensive force to be reckoned with. And of course Chris Osgood continues to be among the elite goaltenders in the NHL.
However that isn't what makes them such a formidable team. The fact is they just flat out know how to win. And Game 1's 3 to 1 victory was a classic example.

So with game 1 in the books, Detroit has shown that familiarity breeds dominance. With that, here are a few things to take away from last nights game 1 and to look for in game 2.
First, it is plain to anyone who has working eyes that Henrik Zetterberg enjoys the hell out of shadowing and dominating Sidney Crosby. It wouldn'y suprise me if Gary Bettman blew up Hanks phone all day asking him to please take it easy on pet Sid. In fact, it's not even funny how glued Z was to The Kid, whose own shadow wasn't even visible. If Zetterberg wins this matchup 85% of the time, this series will be short.

Good to see the wings back in it. Good to see a rematch with the pens. Here's hoping Marian Hossa made the right call. Cannot wait til this series starts tonight! It's gonna be an epic battle, every game, every minute of every period. Your about to see the most competitive series of the last 10 years.

The Cardinals made two important moves on Friday. The first was to activate Ryan Ludwick from the disabled list. After suffering a strained hamstring in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago, he was ready to go after about six or seven days. Putting him on the DL was the only move that the Cards could make though, since they were already going with a short bench and they can't afford to not have Ludwick long term, as Pujols already doesn't have enough protection in the lineup.

Kids, they never know when they are finished. They often fail to recognize when they are outclassed in a fight, or outsmarted in a debate. And that is their very best quality, and the one the Blackhawks are showing right now.

Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals was just another reminder that there is NO team outside of Anaheim and Pittsburgh thet can challenge the Wings in their quest for another title. The Anaheim series showed what the Wings are made of, as the Ducks forced Detroits hand early and often in games. Their patience to wait for mistakes and almost bullet-proof D-men almost sent the Wings home for some early tee times and cold ones on the deck. But Detroit responded. And they did it like they always do: calmly and efficiently, with 4 lines rolling like an avalanche down the mountain side. I look forward to seein those Ducks in the Conference finals next year. But i digress. This team has taken it's shots, and come out the superior team just about every time they hit the ice.

Let's throw Ozzie a bone. I could feel it during games, working around all those people. They were anxious anytime the puck came into the Wings zone, on edge whenever it edged in toward the slot, and sheer panic anytime it made a forward movement toward Ozzie.

I thought I’d give a top 10 list a shot, and I thought defenseman was the place to start. I’ve noticed that the thoughts regarding the top 10 defenseman in the league are quite erratic, and there doesn’t seem to be a widely accepted pecking order. So I present you with mine. I’ve taken all around play into consideration. Both defensive and offensive abilities have been considered.

The American sports landscape has been continually tattooed with dynastic labels like “Team of the Year” or “Team of the Decade.” The NFL in particular has been defined each decade by a juggernaut winning …. a lot. The dominance of franchises like the 70’s Steelers, the 80’s Niners, the 90’s Cowboys, and the Patriots of the new millennium has immortalized the likes of Bradshaw, Aikman and Montana to deific status. The NBA has also provided its share of dynastic runs from the Celtics to the Lakers to the Pistons to the Bulls, and examples abound exist in both hockey and baseball as well.

The Blues win over Detroit on Thursday would've been inspiring no matter how it happened. But the fact that David Backes scored four goals (or five depending on who you believe, since Backes wouldn't claim it) was amazing. Every time the Red Wings got close, Backes would respond. If St. Louis meets up with Detroit in the first round, this game could be enough to give them a real confidence boost after being dominated by the Wings during most of this season. Getting a point in Dallas on Saturday will help the Blues' chances as well, but they're back to needing some help. They are right with the Ducks and Predators when it comes to points, but they are still behind in the wins column, which serves as the first tie-breaker. Hopefully the Red Wings will remain in contention for the Presidents Trophy long enough that they won't be resting players when they host Nashville on Thursday.

I just a few notes on the Blues before previewing the baseball season a bit. First, their effort last night in Chicago was pathetic. If the game had gone exactly the same way, but was played in mid-December, I'd let it slide. But with six games left (now five) and the club is right in the playoff hunt in April for the first time since before the lockout, that's all that this team had? A 3-0 loss? I'm aware that Jeff Woywitka scored with two seconds left, but that's a shutout everywhere but on the stat sheet. The goal didn't change the way the team should look at that game and it certainly didn't change the standings. It should have been 6-0 or 7-0 with the way that the Blues played. That's what they deserved.

Last night's win against Edmonton was very reassuring. I've known all season they were capable of mastering any game and making it more of a workshop on correct playing techniques, but after their disappointing 5-3 loss to Calgary prior to last night's game, my confidence was shaky.

Manny Fernandez was between the pipes for the B's—and the struggles for the net-minder continued, stopping just 26 of 30 shots he faced. Fernandez has now lost his last five-straight-games, and six out of his last seven games started.

Tonight's game between the Blues and the Red Wings could change a franchise. If St. Louis loses, they'll remain at least three points out of the playoffs and it will likely be more with the high amount of games between Western Conference teams scheduled for tonight. They'll probably deal Keith Tkachuk for draft picks or prospects with his contract expiring at the end of the year. They might even cut a couple of other deals. If they win, they could buy for a postseason run which began early last month. The Blues' have the second best record in the NHL over their last 20 games to only the Devils. New Jersey's well into the playoffs at this point as they're likely to win their division and just got back one of the best goalies of all-time in Martin Brodeur. That team is looking to buy more even after picking up Niclas Havelid, a decent defenseman. That team doesn't need anymore to contend for the cup. The Blues, however, need a lot more to contend for the cup.

An attack is an attack, and Saturday's 8-0 loss to the Nashville Predators could only be called an attack. But when the planes hit the Twin Towers, did you lose faith in New York? If anything, America loved New York more for its sudden relegation to "victim" status.

The St. Louis Blues have made a recent push to make the playoffs, climbing out of the cellar of the Western Conference to six points out of the 8th and final seed. As of late, Blues media and fans are talking about a possible playoff run, putting the team in the big dance for the first time since 2004. Are these dreams necessary? Should Blues fans even want a playoff try this season?

I haven't mentioned much about the Cardinals lately and now that the players have reported to spring training, I think it's time that I examined them a bit.
1. Chris Carpenter has looked good so far this spring, but due to his history (surgery before he actually played for us, the nerve thing at the end of 2004, Tommy John surgery in 2007, and now the shoulder injury in 2008 relating to the Tommy John surgery) I don't think I'm going to be convinced that he can go a full season without getting hurt. Even if he's fine in 2009, makes 33 starts while pitching 200+ innings, I think I'll still be skeptical heading into 2010. He's one of the best pitchers in the majors when he's on the field, but he's extremely unreliable.

Hmmmnnnn.... where to begine, where to begin. How about with your statements about hockey's "dedication to fighting and cheap shots in all its forms--any sport where teams are practically required to have an "enforcer" for such duty speaks volumes about that old canard, "I went to a fight, and a hockey game broke out" show that you haven't watched a game in a long time. Although, twenty years ago, each team had 2-3 guys dediciated as enforcers, today, less than half the teams in the league carry one on their roster, and some of them ar no just cementheads but can actually play. While there are exceptions (Boogaard, Laraque, Brashear), the game these days is, for the most part, too fast and skilled, and too financially restrictd by the salary cap, for a team to waste a roster spot on somerone who cannot contribute except with his fists. As an example, the Red Wings don't have an enforcer and haven't had one for years buit just won the Stanley Cup - their fourth Cup in 11 years. Also, twenty years ago, there was an average of more than 2 fights per game, but today, it's something like .43 fights per game. You should check it out some time.

For the fourth time in 11 years, the Stanley Cup is being hoisted in Hockeytown.

After yesterday's 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros pitcher Roy Oswalt is now 4-6 on the season. In six innings pitched he gave up nine hits, four runs (three earned) and struck out four while walking one. His season ERA is 5.38.

After weeks of soul searching I am back. And because the sports world is so busy right now I couldn’t decide which story to write on. With that said, I am going to run through the sports world as a whole and let everyone know what I think about everything. By the way, I haven’t been soul searching at all. I finished school, went home for two weeks and relaxed, headed to Scottsdale, AZ for nine days for my brother’s wedding and then came back to Boston and helped move my girlfriend into her summer apartment. So without further ado, my thoughts.

Wouldn't it be great if NBA officials called things the way their NHL counterparts do?
You know, even if the game is in the balance, you call a penalty when you see a penalty.
In the second overtime with the game tied at 3 in Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, Red Wings rightwinger Jiri Hudler was hit with a four-minute penalty for high-sticking Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi. Detroit had penalty-killed two power plays earlier in the game. But those were two minutes long, and a four-minute penalty kill when the game's long and the team's tired was probably just too much.

I haven't watched much of the NHL playoffs, partly because the two teams I were cheering for New Jersey and San Jose are gone. I'm still not over my Blackhawks missing out either during that incredible end to the season. The Detroit Red Wings look like a great team again after looking pretty mediocre and beatable going into the playoffs. This team sure changed when Chris Osgood came in replacing Hasek. I still can't believe Osgood is this good though and the Red Wings are still around. I guess I haven't watched enough of the Red Wings lately. I finally got access to VS and now the playoffs will be on NBC. Well finally! This tv coverage for the NHL is pathetic, please get hockey back on channels people watch. Sadly, it looks the finals are already over and Pittsburgh didn't even score yet.

The “thanks for showing up” award goes to Sean Avery’s spleen, which ruptured along with the Rangers playoff hopes in Game 3 at the Garden. In a series where the Rangers needed to find a way to get uberstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin off their game, Avery was held in check. Luckily, he all but wrapped up a new contract in the previous series against the New Jersey Devils.
